Types of Widal Tests:

Slide Widal Test: A rapid, qualitative test that shows the presence of antibodies.
Tube Widal Test: A more detailed test that measures the titer (concentration) of antibodies.

When is the Widal Test Used?

Detection of Typhoid: The Widal test helps diagnose enteric fever (typhoid) and other Salmonella infections like paratyphoid fever.

Epidemiological Surveillance: It is commonly used in regions with high incidence of typhoid fever, particularly in developing countries where diagnostic facilities may be limited.

Limitations:

False Positives/Negatives: A positive result could indicate past exposure, and not necessarily an active infection. The test may also give false negatives if the antibody levels haven't risen enough for detection.

Timing: Antibodies may not be detectable in the early stages of the infection, making it important to repeat the test if the symptoms persist.
