Overview

Paradichlorobenzene is used as a fumigant insecticide to control clothes moths. It is also found in deodorant blocks made for trash cans and toilets. Para Dichlorobenzene (1,4-DCB, p-DCB, or para-dichlorobenzene, sometimes abbreviated as PDCB or para) is an aryl chloride and isomer of dichlorobenzene with the formula C6H4Cl2. This colorless solid has a strong odor. Disinfectant, deodorant, and pesticide -  Para Dichloro Benzene balls sold as urinal disinfectant PDCB is used to control moths, molds, and mildew. It also finds use as a disinfectant in waste containers and restrooms and is the characteristic smell associated with urinal cakes. Its usefulness for these applications arises from PDCB's low solubility in water and its relatively high volatility: it sublimes readily near room temperature.

Paradichlorobenzene that binds to soil may be taken up by plants, and plant leaves may absorb paradichlorobenzene from the air. Paradichlorobenzene in air is broken down slowly by other chemicals. It has been found in rainwater and snow. Paradichlorobenzene has been found in groundwater close to a source of contamination. In air, its half-life is about 31 days.
