Cow dung cakes are used for many purposes, including cooking, religious rituals, and as a fertilizer. 

Cooking. Dung cakes, made from the by-products of animal husbandry, are traditionally used as fuel in India for making food in a domestic hearth called a Chulha. They are made by hand by village women & are traditionally made from cow or buffalo dung. One dung cake, on average, gives 2100 KJ worth of energy. One of the by-products we make from cow dung is dried cow dung cake (patty). Dried cow dung cake is deep-rooted in Indian tradition. Farmers in villages use these dried cow dung cake as a fuel to cook food. They are also used for havan (Homam or sacrifice) as it has many auspicious qualities.
