Overview

BOPET film, or Biaxially Oriented Polyethylene Terephthalate film, is a strong, clear, and versatile plastic film known for its excellent mechanical and barrier properties. It's created by stretching polyethylene terephthalate in two directions, resulting in enhanced strength, dimensional stability, and resistance to heat and chemicals. This makes it suitable for various applications, particularly in packaging, where it's used for food, medical, and industrial products. Key Properties and Benefits: Strength and Durability: BOPET film is highly resistant to tearing, puncturing, and other physical stresses. Barrier Properties: It provides excellent protection against moisture, oxygen, and light, preserving product freshness and extending shelf life. Temperature Resistance: BOPET films can withstand a wide range of temperatures, making them suitable for both hot and cold applications.

Product Description

BoPET (biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate) is a polyester film made from stretched polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and is used for its high tensile strength,[1] chemical stability,[1] dimensional stability,[2] transparency[1] reflectivity, and electrical insulation.[1] When metallized, it has gas and moisture barrier properties.[3] The film is "biaxially oriented", which means that the polymer chains are oriented parallel to the plane of the film, and therefore oriented over two axes.[3] A variety of companies manufacture boPET and other polyester films under different brand names. In the UK and US, the best-known trade names are Mylar, Melinex, Lumirror and Hostaphan.[4] It was the first biaxially oriented polymer to be manufactured on a mass commercial scale.[5]

Buyer questions

Frequently asked by buyers

Common questions B2B buyers ask before sourcing BOPET Film. Answers compiled from verified sellers' commercial terms and platform data.

Q: What makes BOPET film superior for food packaging?
A: BOPET film offers excellent barrier properties against moisture, oxygen, and UV light, preserving food freshness and extending shelf life. Its chemical resistance and strength protect food products during transit and storage.
Q: Can BOPET film withstand high-temperature sterilization processes?
A: Yes, BOPET film exhibits high thermal stability and can resist temperatures up to approximately 250°C, making it suitable for applications requiring sterilization and other high-temperature processes.
Q: Is metallized BOPET film available for enhanced barrier properties?
A: Yes, BOPET film can be metallized to improve its gas and moisture barrier effectiveness, which is particularly useful in sensitive packaging applications such as pharmaceuticals and food products.
Q: What are the typical thickness options available for BOPET films in industrial applications?
A: BOPET films are commonly available in thicknesses ranging from 12 microns to 125 microns, allowing customization based on specific application requirements.
Q: How does biaxial orientation enhance the properties of BOPET film?
A: Biaxial orientation aligns polymer chains in two perpendicular directions, significantly increasing tensile strength, dimensional stability, and resistance to tearing and puncturing compared to non-oriented films.
