17-4 is a chromium-nickel-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel used for applications requiring high strength and moderate level of corrosion resistance

The most well known precipitation hardening steel is 17-4 PH. The name comes from the additions 17% Chromium and 4% Nickel. It also contains 4% Copper and 0.3% Niobium. 17-4 PH is also known as stainless steel grade 630

17-4 pH stainless steel has a mean coefficient of thermal expansion of 6.0 x 10-6 in/in/°F with H900 heat treatment, whereas 316L ranges from approximately 9 to 11 x 10-6 in/in/°F. Technology such as thin film is limited to 17-4 PH because the temperature of the sputtering process is too high at the diaphragm
