Armored electrical cables rated from 1.1 kV up to 33 kV are heavy-duty, mechanically protected cables designed for safe underground, outdoor, and indoor power distribution.

Core Configuration and Voltage Ratings

Single-Core Cables: Used primarily in high-current AC systems to avoid magnetic hysteresis heating. They utilize non-magnetic armor like Aluminum Wire Armor (AWA).
Multi-Core Cables: Typically available in 2-core, 3-core, 3.5-core, and 4-core setups. They use magnetic Steel Wire Armor (SWA) since the balanced phase currents cancel out the magnetic field.
Low Voltage (LV): 1.1 kV grade cables, commonly insulated with PVC or XLPE.
Medium Voltage (MV): 3.3 kV, 6.6 kV, 11 kV, 22 kV, up to 33 kV grade cables, almost exclusively insulated with XLPE for high thermal efficiency.

Cable Component Layers

From the inside out, these cables are constructed using the following specialized layers:

Conductor: Made of high-conductivity stranded Class 2 Copper or Aluminum.
Conductor Screen: Semi-conducting tape/extrusion layer used in MV cables (3.3 kV and above) to smooth out electrical stress.
Insulation: Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) for higher temperature ratings (90°C continuous, 250°C short-circuit) or Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) for standard 1.1 kV applications.
Insulation Screen: Semi-conducting layer paired with a metallic copper tape/screen to safely ground fault currents (MV only).
Inner Sheath (Bedding): Extruded PVC or LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) layer that bundles the cores and cushions them from the armor.
Armor: Provides heavy mechanical protection against crushing forces and rodents.
- Steel Wire Armor (SWA) / Steel Tape Armor (STA): Used exclusively for multi-core cables.
- Aluminum Wire Armor (AWA): Used exclusively for single-core cables to prevent eddy current heating.
Outer Sheath: Durable PVC, FR-PVC (Flame Retardant), or LSZH compound that protects the cable from moisture, chemicals, and UV radiation.
